Friction lead starter sections are placed at bottom of push piers to break friction bond between pier and surrounding soil inorder to achieve greater penetration depth. Greater penetration depth helps ensure push pier bears below expansive and unstable soils onto more solid strata. Friction lead starter sections are not required when installing in uniform sands where it is desired to achieve higher friction and capacity at shorter depth. Friction lead sections also prevent direct bearing of push pier on insert collar. Insert collars are not designed to support full capacity of push piers; if a friction lead is not used, it is necessary to use a blank starter pipe also available from Magnum Piering, Inc.
